Book Plastic Ocean: Binding: Hardcover | Pages:  96 | Size:  21x29cm | Language: English | Sculptures: Size with glass: 22cmx20cm | Size without glass: 10 cm | Weight: 3kg | Certificate

Created especially for 1605 Publishers each sculpture is a miniature carefully handcrafted with pieces of plastic waste that the author of the project, Dutch artist Thirza Schaap found during her daily walks at the beach in Cape Town.
Working between The Netherlands and South Africa, artist and sculptor Schaap has originally created bigger size sculptures (between 35 and 60 cm) in her studio or outside, in nature, so they can be photographed after and become a part of the book "Plastic Ocean " published in 2020 by 1605 Publishers.

"I especially love working outside..." - Thirza Schaap states. "Because the process then is surrounded by randomness and coincidence. By this, I mean the unpredictable moments when nature influences my work. When the wind blows and messes up a composition when a bug accidentally lands on one of the sculptures... This is why I also do not retouch the photographs of the pieces and leave them as spontaneous as possible."

Along with the published book, Schaap and the 1605 Publishers team had an idea to create a limited edition version, which apart from the signed by the author book, also include a handmade miniature sculpture in a glass box and a certificate of authenticity. The five miniature sculptures (around 10 cm), each with a different name and a unique story have never been created in this size by the artist before which makes this project even more special.

The sculptures as well as the images in the book show a clash between worlds, offering minimal and aesthetically pleasing compositions which, on closer inspection, in-still a sense of ecological grief. All five sculptures that also have their representation in the book "Plastic Ocean" question consumption, idolatry and what it is we value in our lives today. According to Thirza Schaap, the result came out quirky and playful but also very profound and paradoxical.
