When we look at classic images of street photography from New York in the period between the 1940s and 1980s, we automatically transfer ourselves to a different world. Sometimes it's Helen Levitt's bitter-sweet 40s that capture carefree children who became adults sooner than they should and not by choice. It's also, a painting-like romantic era of Saul Leiter's 60s with his foggy images of blurry human silhouettes in the snow or rain. Colourful umbrellas and yellow taxis rushing by add an extra charm to each photograph. And William Klein's elegant and fashionable 60s where every woman had a perfect lipstick and a geometric coat from Sixth Avenue. New York is also about Janet Delaney's vibrant and colourful 70s that she captured with her Rolleiflex camera. And of course, let's not forget about the lonely, melancholic and decadent streets of New York captured by the legendary Robert Frank
